About the project
Inaugurated in 2025, the Sustainable Engineering and Technology Education Centre features project studios, digital, CAD and environmental laboratories, engineering and fabrication workshop, as well as a range of shared spaces for seminars, group work and collaboration. As part of this project, I was invited to design wall graphics for the ground-floor foyer and first-floor lounge areas.

My design approach was guided by two main objectives:
– To develop graphics that reflect the building’s minimalist aesthetic, including its materials, colour palette and furniture.
– To create graphics that inform, spark curiosity and creativity, and encourage interaction between students and the space.

The Sustainable Engineering and Technology Education Centre (SETEC) is located in the Dorothy Buchanan Building. Dorothy Buchanan was the first woman to become a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, in 1927. In her honour, a photograph of Dorothy is displayed prominently by the entrance in the ground-floor foyer.

For the lounge areas, I drew inspiration from the everyday world of engineering and technology students. The space features wireframe visuals of sustainable devices – similar to the digital models students create in design software –and a gallery highlighting sustainable materials such as timber, recycled steel and low-carbon concrete.
